ATHENS
It is town in which famous Plato’s Academy was located. Contemporary there is well-known Acropolis, on which wonderful temples are located. Nowadays, Athens are one of the biggest European metropolis and is inhabited with about 3 million people. Sudden increase in the amount of inhabitants was after I World War, when displaced people from Asia Minor settled in the town. In Athens dominate the buildings in classicistic style on the basis of which many public utilities was created.
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
Over the Centre of Town dominates huge, flat-topped rock of Acropolis, which is situated on height of 515,09 feet. There are also 4 different hills: Pnyx, Areopagus, The Hill of Nymphs and The Hill of Muse. Acropolis was created on Pericles’s own initiative in V century B.C. On Acropolis there are majestic Pantheon, The Temple of Nike and Erechtheum.
The best survived old Greek temple is Temple of Hephaestus, which is built on the part of Hephaestus. Very interesting might be a trip through the Areopagus, where Saint Paul used to teach and few centuries earlier Socrates was convicted. Only 15 columns left after the biggest, never finished Greek Temple of Olympian Zeus.
Very peculiar place, which is located in district Kerameikos, is the biggest old Athenian cemetery with the remains of beautiful tomb chambers.
One of the new buildings which is worth visiting in Panathenaea – Olympic Stadium from 1895, which is the reconstruction of old Greek stadium.
There are many interesting museums in Athens, which are for sure Worth of visiting. For example: Bizantic Museum, which presents the medieval Greece art; Acropolis Museum with the most precious old Greek sculptures; The Museum of Music Instruments where is the collection of Greek instruments from glockenspiel to bouzouki; National Archeological Museum which contains the richest collection of old Greek culture – vases, the things made with bronze, sculptures; The Museum of Greek Folk Art which presents the arts of potters, weavers, national dress, collections of silver and gold jewelry.
ENTERTAINMENT
It is not difficult when it comes about fun in Athens, because there are many exceptional, traditional places of concerts and Greek dances. The town is rich in locals in which you can hear the music such as Greek Zorbas, there are different types of music. In the seconds part of June artists all over the world are coming here for International Jazz-Blues Festival. Many clubs and taverns with rock, reggae and soul music are in students’ districts: Eksarchia and Neapoli.
From June, for almost 4 months, there is the Athenian Festival, which guaranties (GWARANTOWAĆ) many attractions to you, for example: ballet, opera, classical and jazz music as well as national Greek music.
